Nintendo of Japan president Satoru Iwata said in an interview, "a lot of fans have been asking us to make games in a more 'Western' style, so we looked to the American App Store and Play Store for inspiration. I'm sure fans will be pleased to hear that after a long, hard look at quality titles such as Flappy Bird, Temple Run, and Doodle Jump, you can expect to see something similar in the future."
Iwata has also stated before that he doesn't like the term "free-to-play," so the company also laid out the groundwork for a new payment model, "pay-while-play."
"It's literally just a subscription, like that 'Worlds of Warcrafting' game or whatever. I've never heard of that though. A lot of you may be wondering how much it'll be," an anonymous developer told us. "but I can assure fans that the new 'pay-while-play' model has been tested internally in our company for some time now, trying to find the right price. You can expect to pay upwards of something like 2,400 yen (roughly 20 USD) every week to play something like 'Pokemon Red.'"
When asked to clarify, the anonymous developer said, "yes, the one on the Gameboy."
